Ameresco Inc. (Ameresco), an energy infrastructure company, announced the groundbreaking of a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility being developed by Ameresco through its subsidiary Neogenyx Fuels at the Adams Land & Cattle feedlot in Broken Bow, Nebraska.

The August 26 ceremony brought together agricultural, energy, government, and community leaders to recognize the start of construction on Neogenyx Fuels’ first agricultural RNG facility and highlighted the growing role renewable fuels can play in supporting agriculture, domestic energy production, and economic development.

The event featured remarks from Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, US Senator Pete Ricketts, Neogenyx Fuels chief executive officer (CEO) Michael Bakas, Adams Land & Cattle CEO Abram Babcock, and American Biogas Council vice president of policy Heather Dziedzic, followed by an official groundbreaking and a tour of the future facility site.

The Neogenyx Fuels-owned facility is designed to capture manure from the feedlot and convert it into RNG through eight anaerobic digesters capable of generating more than 264,000 scfh of biogas. Once upgraded to pipeline-quality RNG, the facility is expected to produce approximately 1.2 million MMBtu annually for transportation and other energy applications. Process byproducts will be beneficially reused onsite as livestock bedding and agricultural fertilizer. The project is also expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 70,217 tons (63,700 tonnes) annually, equivalent to the carbon sequestered by roughly 63,800 acres (25,820 ha) of US forest each year.

“Last week’s groundbreaking demonstrated what’s possible when agriculture, innovation, and energy infrastructure come together,” said Leila Dillon, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Ameresco. “The Adams Land & Cattle project is not only transformational for the operation and the broader agricultural sector, but it also provides a blueprint for how American agriculture can play a larger role in the global energy economy.”

“The Adams Land & Cattle RNG facility demonstrates how American agriculture can play an important role in the future of renewable fuels,” said Michael Bakas. “By converting livestock waste into renewable natural gas with the potential to support bio-LNG production for global maritime markets, this project connects Nebraska to the growing demand for lower-carbon energy solutions across the world while driving private investment, job creation, and local economic growth.”

“Innovation has always been part of who we are at Adams Land & Cattle. This project reflects our commitment to finding better ways to operate, support our local farmers, and strengthen the community we call home,” said Babcock. “Through our partnership with Neogenyx Fuels, we are converting a resource we have always managed into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas, while creating a more consistent fertilizer product for local agriculture. It is an important step in advancing our sustainability goals and supporting our vision of building a business for generations to come.”
